IEA Warns of Fragile Global Energy System Amid Geopolitical Risks
Speaking in an interview with France Inter, IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol described the current situation as highly unstable, stressing that global markets are exposed to significant risks due to concentrated supply chains and political uncertainty.
He highlighted the Strait of Hormuz as a major vulnerability for global energy flows, noting that any disruption in the narrow passage could trigger wide-reaching consequences for the world economy. He described the situation as “absurd, but real,” according to his remarks.
Birol warned that the damage already done to global energy stability is not easily reversible, comparing it to a broken object that cannot be fully restored, and emphasized that the consequences of the current instability will likely persist.
He also pointed to ongoing geopolitical developments, including statements and policy signals from major global leaders, as factors contributing to volatility in energy markets.
The IEA chief further noted that the war in Ukraine has already reshaped global energy trade, disrupting oil and gas flows and forcing significant adjustments in supply chains, particularly across Europe.
